About CDFN

Swedish National board on research animal ethics (CDFN) is a public authority with two mandates: to consider appeals to decisions of the regional boards for ethical animal research and to make retrospective assessments of completed animal research projects.

CDFN:s mandate falls under the Swedish Animal Welfare Law which states that retrospective assessments are to be conducted following animal research projects conducted with non-human primates as well as animal research expected to cause great suffering to animals, i.e., projects involving procedures classified as ‘severe’.

CDFN consists of twelve board members (six regular members and six substitute members) as well as a chair and a vice-chair. Eight board members are researchers and four are laypersons of whom two represent animal welfare organisations. The chair and the vice-chair currently serve or have previously served as judges.
